kian t, a self-confessed analogue synth addict, steps up for the 6th secret reels release and with an ep on big bait already under his belt and one forthcoming on toy tonics, 2016 is looking like a vintage year for this italian producer. this ep is all about tough beats, warm & punchy synth lines and a few dusty vinyl samples thrown in for good measure. kian s production values are always on point, and these 3 tracks are no exception, instantly standing out from the crowd. on remix duties is man of the moment daniel leseman. his solo productions and remixes are firm favourites with a vast swathe of top djs. he is also one half of fouk, alongside junktion, who have absolutely taken over recently with releases on heist, razor-n-tape, house of disco and not to mention their own label outplay. daniel turns the tough syncopated beats of flughafen into a shimmering, funk-laden piece of house.

the argentinian based ngly had seemingly appeared out of thin air landing on the brooklyn based l.i.e.s. label in 2014 with an untitled four track white label ep. on this ep, the unsuspecting track -speechless tape- ended up becoming a cult hit with select djs in the scene (i-f, mick wills, intergalactic gary...) eventually leading to it being voted as intergalactic fm s #1 track of the year in 2014. on the heels of his successful debut rudolfo could have stayed the path and produced an easily digestable follow up dance record or two, instead he chose to take his time and reflect. sitting back in the studio tweaking his live act, recording endlessly, transforming and refining his sound.

deep88 is back! here is a 7 track lp, music without any pretence, no silly fx or crazy compression/production tricks to take away from the music. just that 1988/1993 vibe with a slight balearic twist but some how avoiding to sound like a poor copy or dated. this last statement couldnt be any truer on this release. the vibe is carried through the whole ep with each consequent track then offering something a little bit different, some showing his balearic side and other tracks having a more house feel.

four never before released or publicly available demo cuts from the writing sessions of craig peyton and jolyon skinner circa 1983-1985. the duo produced and wrote hits for artists in between working on their own projects. these songs survived the past 30 years on a cassette tape, which was lovingly transferred for this exclusive to peyton records release. after their short but fruitful collaborative period, peyton went on as a writer and band leader and skinner went on to have a career as a songwriter for pop acts such as joe, nsync, and freddie jackson. in the words of craig peyton: “jolyon skinner and i met in the early ’80s through our mutual friend keith diamond (the trinidadian producer of hits such as “caribbean queen” by billy ocean). after we met, jolyon and i started regular writing sessions at my nyc p-factor studio. our first break came in 1983 with howard johnson’s “let this dream be real-. that was followed up with “love of a lifetime” by melba moore and “where ya gonna be tonight” for will collins. after this we were offered a recording deal by april blackwood music, but due to my contract with profile records at the time we couldn’t accept it. shortly after skinner got signed to zomba and we stopped writing together around 1985.

the second release on tb arthurs (312) label finds the mysterious artist revealing a collaborative project with magda as blotter trax. the pair first encountered each other at the famous motor city record store record time, when detroit artist bmg introduced his then co-workers magda and derek plaslaiko to arthur, who was visiting the shop from chicago. sometime after that meeting, magda and arthur went into the studio and jammed together for a week, the session was recorded live on analog 1/4 tape and then three tracks were selected for release. 1a is six and a half minutes of modulated synth sounds that are psyched out and sci-fi, spooky and truly atmospheric. full of cerebral cinematism, acid lines and ghoulish textures all add up to a truly standout track. 2a then marries dark wave pops and clicks, unsettling alien lifeforms and menacing, slo motion industrial drums into a physical and imposing groover riddled with paranoid sirens and drones. last of all, 2b snakes and slithers its way through undulating drums, cosmic freakiness and gloopy synth sounds that are all seductive and subversive in equal measure. this, then, is a truly fascinating pairing.

xcpt music rises from underground electronic music event series taking place in the suburbs of matera, south italy, as mature development deeply rooted and inspired by the uk 90’s scene. it kicks off with label’s manager and co-owner nothus first release, fragments of loneliness, a 12” limited press coming out in the end of september. his first release illustrates a mixture of breaking beats, jungle vibes and detroit soul textures, coexisting in balance in all the tracks with a special broken beat reshape made by italian artist andrea (ilian tape), one of the most interesting newcomer of european techno scene. label artworks represent specific corners of the beautiful matera city, recently rewarded as european capital of culture 2019, and cradle of the label sound.

an obscure tape release discovery by red light radio founder and close friend of the label, orpheu de jong, led to music from memorys latest release. this two track 12inch highlights the work of electronic music pioneer joel graham, a san francisco based artist who self released two cassettes in 1984/85. originally recorded and performed live on pre-midi analogue equipment in 1982 as an outline for a live performance, these visionary tracks provoke much of the same sensibilities found in both contemporary dance music as well as in works of more established vanguard artists of the time. slowly unravelling and deeply hypnotic, joel grahams music seems to manifest a doorway to a profound new world and can be seen as a forerunner of what was to come in electronic music.

dubmasters come back strong on their second release on our catalog, with a heavily road tested banger. 12 bar disco is a caleidoscope of surfed out guitar riffs, dubby chops and vintage pads over a funky 90’s manchester synth bassline, that has proven to shake dance floors around the globe. for this e.p. the original is taken on a slight dubbed out deviation with tape delays taking the foreground on the mix, cosmic pads and extended psychedelic breakdown, definitely a monster.

the omnibus band was founded by jarda zajpt and petr dikan in 1979 in czechoslovakia. having met at the electronic high school, electronics was their field of expertise. over time, petr dikan constructed several sound devices such as the Šílený fridrich (Šf, crazy frederick) keyboard and the vsd (všude samý dráty/wires everywhere) generator which he operated during the recordings and also at concerts. at that time, heavily influenced by brian eno and robert fripp from the king crimson band, jarda zajpt played the guitars, using all kinds of effects, pre-recorded tapes, and one or more interconnected tape recorders. the first record, “israels”, was produced between 1980 and 1982. in 1985, jarda zajpt swapped a guitar for a keyboard and a new member arrived – pavel zvolenský – who programmed and played the automatic percussions. martin bauer, playing the bass guitar, completed the trio. they have produced a second album, “rhythmus”, in this assembly. remastered from unreleased tape recordings. this is the first release in the framework of the project jupiter 08 – archeology of the slavic electronic sound.

electri city was created in 1980 in bundt’s own studio. using a ppg synthesizer and a teac four-track tape recorder, he anticipated the home recording trend. he worked on the mixes with a revox tape machine, cutting and splicing by hand. whereas he had enlisted guest musicians on the predecessor neon, this time around he did everything himself, except for two tracks which featured keyboarder steve robison (reiner geyer) who had played with bundt in the krautrock band nine days’ wonder.

nagamatzu were the british duo of andrew lagowski (seti, legion, terror against terror) on synths, guitar, and programming and stephen jarvis (pure motorised instinct, terraform) on synths and bass. formed in 1982 after messing around with old tape machines and drum boxes, making numerous contributions to international compilations and erratically releasing their own cassettes. their name comes from a character in jg ballard‘s “atrocity exhibition” and their music reflects his influence. nagamatzu self-released their debut cassette “shatter days” in 1983 after messing around with old tape machines, drum boxes and effects.

the green moon rises over the freshly scorched post-apocalyptic earth, as one last droid emerges from the mass wreckage of the last crumpled city. that droid is neon x. snow bone returns to lt with another ferocious four-track ep, following on from his remote viewer ep, mystic vision black label and black patterns lp from last year. tape-driven techno never got it so hard.. this time driving the desk with stress-pelting rave alarms, scuffed & crunchin city-escape bass lines, scattered snare-morphed-into-laser modular experiments and hissed-up mix-downs to melt any and all sound systems.

after spending the majority of 2009 in hollywood, chanes briefly returned home to finish up songs for what would become his 2010 release, an experimentation in instrumentation. the 15-track tape, presented by house shoes, exposed us all to the nomadic 21-year-old producer from canton, michigan. chanes would spend the next two years working between home and brooklyn, before relocating to arizona, where he would release his follow up project, renegade hands, (insect records 2013). presented again by shoes, hands solidified chanes as one of the most promising young producers in the country.
fast-forward to 2016, and at 27, this self-titled debut takes us circa 2007 - 2009 with the soul-chopping salad days of his mother s basement, through the alternative sampling williamsburg, brooklyn sessions of 2010. if the melancholy desert psychedelia of his isolated four years in perpetual southwestern summer gives us a glimpse into his growing electronic influences, then the angst of his winter homecomings are hiding under the aggressive parka weather beats that first caught the attention of detroit’s underground.

given that cocktail d amore s first entry into the re-edit arena, cockring d amore, landed almost a year ago, this follow-up is long overdue. whereas that ep featured a trio of reworks from the extended family, both tracks on this solid 7- (snigger) come from berlin-based dj/producer trent. he begins with the cheery european disco of -the acrobat-, where prominent horn lines rise and fall over slick funk guitars and shimmering strings. flip for the cosmic disco-meets-cosmic rock masculinity of -the fool-, a killer fusion of elastic slap bass, eyes closed guitar solos and occasional blasts of glam rock vocals. whip off your t-shirt and get to it (dancing, that is).

matthew dears audion project stands proudly at the intersection between art and hedonism, realised over a decade long dedication to powerful and relevant dance music. growing out of the vibrant diy detroit underground, audion and his contemporaries were free to feed off the energy reverberating from uk and european dancefloors, but singular in their desire to create their own sound and spirit. an audion release is techno in its purest sense - whether its pushing the bombastic limits, spinning the dancefloor out of control or elegantly toying with just a few sonic elements.

the music has come into my life when i was about 9 years old, thanks to one of my sisters tape with songs by bob marley and the wailers. so i switched from reggae to dub, from dub to jazz, from jazz to radical improvisation in a moment.now i m 33, and after producing pretty much any kind of music, i want to put together what i still like of dub music with that of the south of europe, which is the place where i grew up, melting everything together with vintage equipments and working with modern machines at the same time. playing and producing this music has been therapeutic for my head. making all this known is for me like seeding again the love for music without any distinction. andrea gabriele 1981 - 2015

in 2007, renowned french producer julien jabre tracked down the american gospel singer phyliss mckoy joubert on myspace. joubert was already a cult figure for house aficionados thanks to -stand on the word-, a song she wrote and performed with her -celestial choir- in 1982 that became a staple of the club scene in new york. it resurfaced as a mysterious bootleg in 2000. julien, who d fallen in love with the song, was eager to remix and officialy rerelease it. when he finally reached out to phyliss, she explained the multitrack tape had been lost. the only thing to do was rerecording it-along with 10 other tracks. today on french label elias, julien and the joubert singers are releasing -stand on the word- in its original and unique 1982 version (mistakenly named after larry levan) and 3 brand new mixes including a fresh dimitri from paris remix. that s how the good lord works!

real name fernando cappelletti, the rosario native’s early releases arrived on airdrop records, followed by appearances on esperanza before launching savor music alongside jorge savoretti in 2011. since then the label has hosted the likes of felipe valenzuela, martinez, kastil, marcman and franco cinelli whilst garnering a reputation as one of argentina’s key purveyors of house and techno. the album’s subterranean aesthetics are present from the beginning, with mesmerising tape echoes in ‘the real’, deep pads in ‘trb’ and the rhythmic energy of ‘rainforest’. ‘geibi’ then demonstrates intricate pops and glitches before ‘in amour’ settles for a compelling groove. ‘flavor’ is then a percussive number with a hypnotizing appeal until ‘faiser’ concludes the album with a punchy, dancefloor driven workout.

keith tenniswood returns in 2016 with dub vault vol. 2, the second emission of dubwise productions under his radioactive man moniker, originally recorded a decade ago while based in scrutton street studios. a long time fan of roots, reggae and dub here he fully indulges in the genre whose keystone bass weighted sounds have informed the electro-focused designs he is predominantly known for. explosion begins the ep recorded utilising new toy at the time, a korg esx1 sampler and sequencer, resulting in simple but crashing dancehall beats with a diliinja style bassline that is pure roughage. second track razor sees tenniswood also take up the guitar as well as beat programming in this track named after the * stepping razor* peter tosh and a nod to his music hero adrian sherwood and on u sound vibes. blazer rounds off the ep, a collab with long term dub head and band member with keith from bargecharge (check fuel records early releases late 90s) james foster. tape echo and distorted bass make up the thick sound of this trac

wade from hello records called mr. pc “detroit’s hardest working dj” about a year back, and the fruits of his labor shine through on this curious beatdown and jazz funk re-edit record. in his own words, “the scene doesn’t need another hand-stamped and numbered vinyl-only disco edit label, so i went ahead and took the proverbial razor and tape to some jazz-fusion-disco-not-disco tracks that influenced me coming up as a bass player, now fully capable for dj dance floor elevation.”

stone cold classic, although pastime paradise has been reissued a couple of time on compilations every single reissue has used the rocky lp version which is not nearly as good as the original 7inch cut. as we at athens of the north like to do things right we went back to the sony tape vault and had the 7- version transferred for the first time since the o.g 45 was cut. this 45 sounds fantastic, much stronger then the o.g 45 cut so its a no brainer. on the flip we took one of our favourite track from the lp and introduced it to 7inch for the first time, mambotango is a dreamy sountracky latin disco number i used to spin on warm up duty, very new york.
